Where Are They Now?

When working on commissioned shoots, I always supply a thorough selection of processed images with a licence to be used by the business, in any media, for an unlimited time.

So, it’s never easy to know exactly how and where my commercial images are used. Even so, I thought I’d search some out and show you how some of my clients have been using them publicly online.

Copy Work

Earlier this month I returned to visit Christopher Bramham, an artist living and working in East Cornwall. Chris sells his work through Jonathan Clark Fine Art, an art dealer based in Chelsea, London and requires photographs of his paintings and drawings, which can be used to showcase his work.

Photographing paintings is a very technical aspect of photography. A camera profile is created for the camera body, lens and lighting combination to ensure all colours are accurately reproduced. The painting must then be lit in a manner which ensures all parts of the artwork are lit perfectly evenly. Powerful strobe lights help reduce the effect of drop-off as the distance from the light sources increases, particularly useful when in this case the largest painting was over 5 feet in height.

The challenge of photographing these paintings is further increased when oil paintings with impasto elements (area of thick paint or texture) are involved and in addition to lighting evenly, you also wish to emphasise the texture of the brush strokes while minimising glare. This can be achieved by polarisation and carefully positioned lights.

The combination of the Nikon D800 and professional Nikkor lenses enable extreme detail to be captured in every reproduction as shown in the images below, a 100% crop from the image above.

This painting presented another challenge in that it was mounted in a deep frame behind glass.

In addition to these oil paintings I have also been required to copy pastel, watercolour, pencil and charcoal drawings.

Thank you to Christopher Bramham for kindly giving permission to use these images on this web site.

Events, Buildings, Cables and More!

My clients always come before self-promotion! So it’s always difficult to keep up with social media, especially when times are busy. After far too long it’s time for an update. So here are of the images from some of the projects I’ve been working on recently.

Photography for Apps

An interesting opportunity arose recently to produce a series of photographs for Colourful Semantics, an iPad app developed by London Speech Therapy, based on the work of Alison Bryan.

In order to assess and develop children’s language skills, they need to be shown photographs of specific situations. Rather than use stock images, by using my services, the developers were able to ensure images had no distracting elements, were of the highest quality and exactly matched what they required.

A few of the images and the corresponding specific scenario requirements are below.

William Holland Installation at The Scarlet Spa

I was recently commissioned by William Holland, the world’s leading specialist manufacturer of copper baths and basins, to photograph their installation at the stunning Scarlet Hotel and Spa, Mawgan Porth, Cornwall.

They required images of the installation with lighting showing how they appear in-situ, to the naked eye.

Vision Arts Pewter

Vision Arts Pewter are a small family run business manufacturing a diverse range of Tin Pewter products from their workshop in South West Cornwall. They sell their products online using their own website, Amazon and eBay as well as providing wholesale stock.

They required me to photograph approximately 150 pewter products as well as producing a panoramic image for each collection. The images are to be used on their new website which will be launched shortly as well as replacing the existing images on their Amazon and eBay listings.

The images had to meet the strict Amazon requirements and had the additional challenge of often being highly reflective with complex designs comprising of many gaps.

The items were photographed using the Nikon D800 with Nikkor 105mm f2.8 micro lens on a back and under-lit photography table and then further processed in Photoshop to produce a pure white background.

These are some of the images produced.

Product Photography for Amazon

Amazon have strict rules for the images used on Amazon Marketplace and using a commercial photographer can alleviate the problems caused when trying to produce your own images.

For the main product image:

  • The image must be the cover art or a professional photograph of the product being sold. Drawings or illustrations of the product are not allowed.
  • The image must not contain gratuitous or confusing additional objects.
  • The image must be in focus, professionally lit and photographed or scanned, with realistic colour, and smooth edges.
  • All other products should fill 85% or more of the image frame.
  • The full product must be in frame.
  • Backgrounds must be pure white (RGB 255,255,255).

For additional other view images:

  • The image must be of, or pertain to, the product being sold.
  • The image must be in focus, professionally lit and photographed or scanned, with realistic colour, and smooth edges.
  • Other products or objects are allowed to help demonstrate the use or scale of product.
  • The product and props should fill 85% or more of the image frame.
  • Cropped or close-up images are allowed.
  • Backgrounds and environments are allowed.
  • Text and demonstrative graphics are allowed.

I am able to produce images ready for you to upload which comply 100% with these site standards and show your products at their best.

Product images must show correct colour and to achieve this I have custom profiles created for my camera under various lighting conditions (using the x-rite color checker) and colour-calibrated monitors to check your product has been accurately reproduced.

Sharpness and Consistency
To achieve perfect focus and sharpness, high power studio strobe lighting is used with consistent colour temperature and intensity. The combination of this small aperture and fast shutter speed combined with a professional Nikkor macro lens attached to a 36 megapixel Nikon D800 camera produces an outstanding image.

Perfect Backgrounds
Images are then post-processed in Photoshop to remove any imperfections and clipping paths drawn to achieve the pure white background. Shadows and reflections can be removed if required.

Below is an image I produced recently for Ongaro, an online retailer of women’s fashion – special occasion shoes, bags, clothes and accessories.

The Old Workshop

Last week I produced some photographs for a new holiday property in Newquay, Cornwall called “The Old Workshop“. The owners had some existing photographs but wanted professional images that would show the accommodation at its finest.

During the shoot, an iPad in conjunction with a Weye Feye adapter was used to control the Nikon D800 DSLR, enabling images to be composed and checked live on the iPad’s retina display. In post-processing these images were combined as multiple layers in Photoshop. This enabled reflections to be removed from the pictures on the walls, shadows removed and extra highlight details added to enhance the images.

Examples of the images created are below.
